Monica is passionate about working with and learning from forcibly displaced people and comes to Abara with a background in public health and nonprofit leadership.


She is eager cultivate community-wide support for the mission & vision of Abara House.


After working with asylum seekers through her public health nursing coursework, Monica connected with others working in this space and helped found a 501(c)3 in Fort Worth, DASH Network, that provides comprehensive services to people who are seeking asylum. She currently serves as the Board President of DASH.


Monica also works as a Nurse Case Manager in El Paso and is pursuing a Masters of Applied Science with an emphasis on Community-Based Program Planning & Global Health through Johns Hopkins University. As a Colombian-American, Monica is familiar with the tension of straddling two cultural identities and finds comfort in the beautiful mix of two worlds here in the borderlands. Monica is married to her husband, Keshav, who is a student at Paul Foster School of Medicine.


In her free time, she enjoys playing with her puppy Nadia, hiking, yoga, and trying out new restaurants in El Paso
