Salvador "Sal" Sierra

Abara House, Caretaker + Land Steward

BIO

Mr. Sal Sierra is a God-send. His lived experience and wisdom is a grounding presence as he works around Abara's four acre property. His early years are rooted swimming in the Rio Grande long before the border fence was established. As a local graduate of Bowie High School, he has fond memories of El Paso-Juarez, Chamizal National Memorial and the significance of the park’s story, while reflecting upon the painful history of Smeltertown and its effect on public health in the region.

Sal is a steward of the land and a friend to many who is passionate about the dignity of all people. Sal is an artist, storyteller, woodworker, and sage. He and his wonderful wife, Rosemary, stay in the local Abara Apartments a stone’s throw from the Historic Hacienda. They walk daily along the border with their beloved dogs, Coco and Chewy, and we’re grateful for the walk we share together.
